I’m a bit confused.. Is that third panel supposed to be last?

Panels 1,2 and 4 looks like they’re set in a hangar, dude looks kinda bored in 4, seemingly moments after his mate got blown to bits in 3?

The bluish hue in 3 plus the background tells me the cockpit door is closed and they’re in space, the lack of that same hue in 4 means they’re still in the hangar?

I’m confused….

No 3 is a memory

Cass was killed in their previous encounter with the Drangs. So panel 3 is a flashback and our pilot here, she is ready for some revenge I’m guessing.

Seconded. She looks worried in the second panel, then steeled her resolve by remembering her friend

Ya it confused me for a moment. I remember that event and after a bit, how she survived, but it still appeared a bit confusing tho I do think it was well done. Shows how she is in the same type of ship and everything so invoking those memories is realistic.

i was thinking all the radio chatter was a flashback thing, like she’s re-living the moment from start to Cass’ death, but not entirely in order.

I’d need to go back and check those earlier pages to double check. but that’s my guess, she’s just alone doing a checkup on her ship, and sitting in there is causing unpleasant memories to show up.

Edit: Nope, not what i was thinking, radio chatter is real and in the present. Cass was killed in a surprise attack, they weren’t aware the Drang were going to be there at the time.

I think the glib chatter, particularly about atomizing people, made her flash back to that traumatic moment. I read it as her pushing that pain away and coldly steeling herself for the combat. I think she finds the chatter naive and disrespectful but cynically plays along to support the team.

I suggest re-reading the previous issue

That frame is a memory from the events in this strip: https://cad-comic.com/comic/the-starcaster-chronicles-08-23/

If you look closely, panel three has white vignetting (the white fuzzy around the border) marking it as a flashback. The rest of the panels are solid colors to the borders, indicating they are present day.

Yeah, I took that to be reflections on the… Windshield? Do you call it a windshield in space?

I guess arguably it keeps your wind in the cockpit, unless you break it?(pun intended)

But you’re probably right, a reflection wouldn’t align with the boarder of the panel so neatly!

I known over the years 4 ‘nam vets, everyone of them had PTSD, none of them got help.

Thank you, first panel, for reminding me of first season Batman.

Tim I love your work, but it would really help to give a little more information into that being a flashback. I wouldn’t have known without checking the comments. Maybe a word bubble?

I think while that’s fair – I feel a sepia coloured panel (aka – universal flashback indicator) may have helped! The layout made perfect sense to me, regardless. Just a layman’s feedback, don’t mind me.

Love your work!

He has very clearly made the hazy blue-white tinge around the edges of that panel, indicating a memory. It’s a fairly common technique, I think.

I don’t know about clearly. I personally didn’t notice it, and only recognise it as a ‘memory’ because I recognise the character in the series and am familiar with her tragedy, and the panel arrangement makes sense if it was a flashback. The main issue with that in this context is that it also kinda blends in with the rest of the panel and the objects within, so the effect might have been immediately lost. It seems to be the case for some people if you look at comments. First time readers or those who aren’t as invested in the… Read more »
