I suppose that depends on which side you’d classify this one, and how you count (temporarily) unavailable ones. There are currently 4 (known) Starcasters in the galaxy. -Vectanix has one for the Dranglaex, currently out of commission while recuperating after wiping out a planet. -La’Ni has one for the Federation, currently en route towards here. -Cort has one, now working for the Federation and en route towards here. At the start of the series it was assumed the Dranglaex had this one, but it was actually missing until Cort found it. -Danton had one for the Federation until he met… Read more »
Good summary, but there are 6 known Starcasters in the galaxy. Unfortunately, Nyrah cuts off Speck before he can finish his sentence here about the other two:
Six in the universe, but I am assuming (though this could be wrong) the other two are in different galaxies. That would also explain why they aren’t even mentioned as a potential factor in this war. I probably could’ve worded it ‘this galaxy’ instead of ‘the galaxy’ for clarity. My speculation is there originally was only one Starcaster per galaxy. Danton’s one would then be the one originally found in this galaxy, the Dranlaex found one in theirs, La’Ni brought hers over here after whatever it was she was a refugee from, and the Odrossians also hid theirs here. (Probably… Read more »
Most likely they are with one or two powers that are neutral in this conflict, but powerful enough that they aren’t a target for the Drangalex just to get the starcaster – or they’re far enough away not to be a factor, I think the Drangalex come from another galaxy originally? Or at least one of those two is known to be destroyed/nonfunctional.
Good call, I did not remember that and thought there were only four. 10 years ago, I can’t believe I’ve been reading and enjoying the starcaster chronicles for that long
When Cort went to bed last night, the Federation had 2, the Drangl’laex had 1, and Cort had the 4th. As of right now, the federation has 1, the Drang’laex have 2, and Cort still has the 4th. It’s a bad situation for the Federation, but they’ve got 2 potential advantages: First, there’s the fact that the 2 Drang’laex starcasters are likely not able to be used at full power for at least a few days- one of their two users is injured, and the other needs to attune/train with his new starcaster before getting full power from it. Secondly,… Read more »

I haven’t been paying much attention to Federation troops’ uniforms, but this page made me look a little closer. The guy giving orders has to be the captain, yet when I looked at him I saw a uniform seemingly identical to everyone else’s. That wouldn’t make sense.
Then I looked closer and noticed what looks like green chevrons on their right shoulders – those are different. Now I know what the rank of a captain and of a “teon first-class” look like.
One for “lance major” is known too, thanks to this page: https://cad-comic.com/comic/the-starcaster-chronicles-11-09/
They also have the glowing insignias that seem to designate if they belong to army or fleet etc. On your link you can see La’ni has a divided oval shape with a dot in the lower half. The soldiers on https://cad-comic.com/comic/the-starcaster-chronicles-13-06/ appear to wear the same symbol, so that’s probably army/infantry. The now-deceased Major had the same: https://cad-comic.com/comic/the-starcaster-chronicles-12-24/ Fleet seems to have a Y-shaped symbol reminiscent of wings, you see that pretty much everywhere. The Marshals appear to wear a (blue?) star: https://cad-comic.com/comic/the-starcaster-chronicles-12-04/ There’s also what appears to be a uniform Federation badge that is worn on the left shoulder,… Read more »
If you look at their right shoulders, it looks like there’s some kind of green symbol that seems to be different for different people. The guy giving orders has what looks like two (maybe 3) vertical bars. In the page you linked, the captain of the ship has 3 vertical bars, which might be the same (hard to tell because of the angles) or a similar rank
The Federation Starcaster guy is dead, so the regen probably wouldn’t work anymore, and the arm could be removed using even a spoon, but it’d obviously take a long time. 😛
Anyone else having these lyrics in their head.
“Ships on vigor of the waves are skimming
Barren summits to the verdant plains
Each horizon is a new beginning
Rise and reign”
Bonus points if that song came to mind and you HAVE NOT played Assassins Creed Valhalla.
Haven’t played Valhalla, but I’ve listened to that Miracle of Sound song enough times to hear it out loud in my head 🙂

Boarding that ship may end up being a wrong choice. The Dranglaex don’t need it anymore (once their own troops leave it), so the might just blow it up with Federation troops on board. Though I think get why the Captain Viking wants that done, assisting the survivors if there are any, securing the Stacraster if he knows it’s there (that one trumps almost anything else), retaking the ship (it could probably be towed back and repaired later). Also he does say “Once we clear some space around the Xhelgos”, so will probably only order the ship boarded once it’s… Read more »

Here is why those starcasters should always have an escort of 20 dreadstorms 24/7 + someone trained to take over the starcaster on a different ship just in case something happens to the bearer.
Now the Drangalex prince, with minimal adaptation time as he probably trains his mind and body for the binding since centuries, will be able to obliterate any rescue ship within 5 minutes.
Well a dreadstorm appears to be a capital ship akin to like a starwars imperial stardestroyer, or a US navy aircraft carrier. You dont expect it to be destroyed easy.
So it doesnt really need an escort, only reason a Aircraft carrier needs escort is because of submarine defence, and there is little in the way of submerging in space
If it wasnt for the traitor in that ship it would have stood up against the attack pretty ok. And you dont assume traitors in ranks that can get to the command and control section of a ship.
Obviously the Federation don’t assume that there are traitors around as they don’t even bother to post security to guard important/sensitive areas of the ship.
If they had infinite ships they might have done that, but there’s a war going on. They also need to have ships ready to defend if the Dranglaex appear and attack sector XYZ in the galaxy.
They could’ve kept the Starcasters at home, but they also needed to find the Dranglaex fleet, and the Starcasters seemed their best shot at detecting them. It did find them Cort too. (Although he was already going to come voluntarily.)
There’s also the fact that sometimes putting all your eggs in one basket will just encourage the enemy to do the same and cause a catastrophic battle that defeats you. Or, worse, one of their starcasters obliterates such a fleet in a single shot.
I think keeping the caster on a single dreadstorm would be the better play by virtue of being lower profile.

I expect the prince to be able to escape with the Starcaster but I hope that at the very least the Feds shoot down some cruisers. So far they have always been on the backfoot, only reacting and losing one Starcaster makes it even worse, hell almost hopeless even. After all we are talking about a race that already managed to wipe out life in one galaxy before they jumped to this one (crazy how far their technology must be to be able to travel between Galaxies and to communicate with their home system in real time), giving them one… Read more »

I just have to say, those ranks (or at least the forms of address) are NOT conducive to military efficiency. Rather than “Teon First-Class,” in times of battle he should be “Teon.” “Master Chief Vallar Officer” -> “Master Chief.”

Has Cort finally gotten over his Han Solo complex and realized that on one hand you have a Federation of planets/systems trying to govern a civilization (even if its imperfect) while on the other you have what are essentially space nazis racially-purifying the universe through one mass genocide after another?
So wait, which sides have how many starcasters? I’m not sure.
I believe it is 2 for each side currently.
Each side now has one experienced and one newbie Starcaster user.
I suppose that depends on which side you’d classify this one, and how you count (temporarily) unavailable ones. Agree, amazing that it’s 10 years already. Also nice to see how Tim’s artistic style has continued to evolve over that decade.

There are 36 different insignia shown in the lore section of the printed Volume One. Tim isn’t just making them up as he goes along 🙂
Is the time of glory, the time of blood.
Better knife that Cort had when thinking about cutting his arm, clearly 🤣🤣
The Federation Starcaster guy is dead, so the regen probably wouldn’t work anymore, and the arm could be removed using even a spoon, but it’d obviously take a long time. 😛
The starcaster was healing Cort too fast. This time around the wearer is dead, so the starcaster was probably inert.
Panel 2: Now that’s what I call a disarming smile.
That joke cut deep.
I do hope they have abbreviations for those ranks when battle starts and chaos erupts…
Also, Captain Viking looks like he means business.
I hope we get to see more of him!

You rather forget missile defense. He’s not wrong about escorts, but size and complement is not quite feasible. Plus, those ships don’t look cheap.
It’s worth asking why the Starcaster user was on the bridge in the first place. Like why would he need to be there?
It enabled BOTH The bridge AND the starcaster to be taken out at the same time.
Of course that’s also EXTREMELY bad luck….
The Drangleax based their entire plan off what….a 1 in a million chance?(of course it’s a comic so really it’s 100% chance….)
Obviously the Federation don’t assume that there are traitors around as they don’t even bother to post security to guard important/sensitive areas of the ship.
