I wonder if the collateral damage from Cort using the Starcaster as the other Patreon option would have been Cort overextending and knocking himself unconscious for a time.
He was still learning to have the right power output. I imagine it is like giving a regular joe suddenly the power to lift the Earth. How do you get the fine motor control to use exactly the right amount of power? Give the superpowered joe a rock and ask them to throw it 50km. How easy would that be? Cort could meander between slicing a moon in half and barely registering on the shields without proper training. So far it’s mostly been curtailing it to only destroy rocks by the looks of it. Even if off panel he was… Read more »
Yeah, that was what I was thinking as one of the options of what could go wrong. Cort could end up hitting several ships, both the good guys and bad guys with an uncontrolled blast.

I have a feeling comic book physics don’t work in this way and starcasters uniforms have special lockdowns that protect in experienced casters in space. You see this with the prince using his star caster, burning away his uniform sleeve, and then safely walking back into the ship
Or it could be that learning how to breathe in space with a starcaster is a pretty basic function of the starcaster that Cort simply hasn’t had time to learn how to use yet. So far all the training he’s had was “how not to obliterate us by accident” training afterall.
I mean it was a tool for terraforming planets – it’s got to have some functions for protecting its user in hostile environments like space.
I figure that a society that does a lot of space travel, on ships/stations/etc would also spend a lot of time doing space walks. And as the frequency of needing to be “out in space” increases, so would the variety of encountered dangers in doing so. This would lead to a greater push in space suit safety advancements, and it always seemed to me that some sort of gasket system at key extremity points could prevent catastrophic pressure loss to the whole suit in the event you tore the material by your leg or wrist. In other words, if Cort… Read more »

With how angry Cort’s getting about the Dranglax getting away, it seems he does care enough opposing them that he wouldn’t have been satisfied running away and staying out of the fight.
At least he shelved the anger when he saw hurt the Lance Major was.

I’d like to know more about La’ni. Just how did she get mixed up in all this? Just how does one end up with a Starcaster in the first place? By accident, as with Cort? Being chosen by the Federation? How could they possibly make a decision on whom to trust with that kind of power? Or did their military command just go with “She’s our most capable soldier/officer, she’s it”? If so, do the qualities of a good soldier/officer really transfer well to being a suitable bearer — or will we see the consequences of that kind of militaristic… Read more »
Oh — thanks for the reminder. Still interested to see how she plays out in the rest of this.

Cort could have hit a friendly ship with a planet-obliterating weapon.
This would have been bad.

I like how the starcaster use comes with a painful price, better than most powerful artefacts

Always fun to hypothesize on the other side of the what ifs. Has a list of potential options/death that have been avoided for the other side of the choices been put up on the Patreon side of things or is that something ‘Author’s eyes only? Understandable if so

Not sure how to delete comments on here.
He only takes off one glove, and it looks like only one glove is off in the last panel? Unless that’s already been edited!
Did the gloves come off or not ? 😉
Yes but also no… 😛
The left glove is actually a symbiote. It got back onto Cort’s hand to feed on his resources. It did that on the second frame, while out of sight.
Actually it’s in the first frame. Cort is trying to hold it back but it slips on nonetheless. 😉
Glove has been fired for misconduct.
Good riddance!
More importantly where is the Starcaster?
On his arm, under the suit? It’s bonded to his skin, it’s not like he can get a sleeve under it.
Seems like if Cort would have shot, would have need a very fast lesson about breathing in space then
I had not thought of that – if he would have taken a shot, he would have had probably only a few seconds to get back through the airlock…
