My first modem was 300 baud, and I used it with my capital-letters-only Apple ][+ (64K of memory!). I literally could read text faster than it came in over the phone line. By the time I got to 14.4K, I was pretty happy, and after that, things were pretty much as fast as I even wanted. It still boggles my mind how fast video loads these days.
