Last year I started a series of Console War prints, each focusing on a different generation of gaming (we are currently on the ninth generation of home gaming consoles!).
Wave Two is finally up for preorder, and features the second three prints (generations 4,5 and 6) in the series. Like last time, the prints will be 17×11, big enough to enjoy the art, but not so big you couldn’t decorate your gaming room with a few of them (*nudge nudge*). The prints will be $10 a piece, or $25 for the set of three. All Wave Two pre-ordered prints will be hand-signed by me, and are expected to ship in late April/early May.
I’m also making Wave One available for purchase. These will ship in late April/May as well, but will not be signed (that was a bonus for the original pre-order only).
Orders will be open for two weeks.
Generation 4: Super Nintendo vs Sega Genesis vs Neo Geo
Generation 5: Playstation vs Nintendo 64
Generation 6: Playstation 2 vs Xbox vs Dreamcast vs Gamecube
This is not the right time for these picures

Would 2pm work better for you, or…?
Although I hate occupying the moral high ground I kinda have to agree with Stephan. We’ve never been closer to WWIII today since WWII ended. Although I do understand this feels different for people in the USA than people living in Europe.
Really? You don’t feel like it’s a little hypocritical to take that stance now? The Console War didn’t ruffle your moral feathers six months ago. 😉 Shouldn’t war be objectionable whether one is actively taking place in the world or not? As a society it’s been a mainstay component of our pop culture entertainment for decades, and yet every so often we’re all reminded that actual war is pretty horrific, and we run to that moral high ground for a few weeks to make ourselves feel better… buuuut eventually we’re right back to playing the same video games and watching… Read more »
I don’t think it’s about cancelling console wars alltogether, but it would show support to postpone posts like these while hundreds of millions if not bilions of people are holding their breath because of a recently invoked war that might escalate into a world wide armed conflict. So yes, you might call it hypocritical to ‘glorify’ war in games and look at that differently in real life, but then again, you might also call it considerate to at least postpone posting about glorified (fictional) war in times like these.
I don’t think it’s hypocritical to enjoy war in entertainment, and abhor war in real life; that’s a simple matter of separating reality from fiction. I can enjoy violence on TV because I know it’s makeup and special effects, but am horrified to hear about people really being hurt. I do think it’s hypocritical to make empty gestures in support, like “postponing” things. We don’t want to actually change our behavior, we just want to temporarily feel like we’re morally superior XD It’s dumb. Like when a school gets shot up, and Congress clogs up Twitter with “thoughts and prayers”… Read more »
Thank you Tim for taking the time to give an elaborate and respectful answer. I respect the way you take stance and voice your opinion. I didn’t suggest postponing because I want to be able to buy the posters later (personally I wouldn’t mind if the posters were skipped completely, but I’m aware that fictional depictions of war are a core concept in the gaming industry and a lot of people enjoy engaging in stuff revolving around this subject). What I did want to say was that right at this time it’s a sensitive subject to a lot of people… Read more »
I think you need to understand the context we in the US have lived in (assuming you’re not from here?). The console wars comics began in 2013. Hell, the entirety of CAD started in 2002. The US was actively involved in the War in Afghanistan from 2001 until 2021. For two decades, until just last year. Meaning the entire series was done while the country Tim is from was at war. Should he not have drawn any kind of fictional conflict as long as some kind of real-world conflict exists, or just this particular one for some reason? War sucks,… Read more »
You’re absolutely right, about “empty-gesturing” and “posing” for the public, but at the same time I know where the sentiment these fans of your stuff come from. Personally, this war has hit me closer than any other. Living in Western Europe, I don’t really expect the actual war will be calling in our doorstep anytime soon. However, we’re already seeing the economic reprecussions and all that coming our way (specially after these two “already-fkin-hard” years). But what did break *me* a bit inside is having half my teammates from work (been wfh for a couple of years) are based in… Read more »
Well said.
Citation needed. Pretty sure history is filled with times we’ve been closer. Times when the United States and USSR came thiiiiiiiis close to nuclear war.
For this current situation to get close to being a world war, the rest of the world would actually have to do something instead of looking at Ukraine getting invaded and saying “well that sucks, good luck with that.” Can’t be a world war if the world refuses to provide any military aid.
Having grown up in the ’80s, I respectfully disagree with the statement “We’ve never been closer to WWIII ….” We were pretty much sitting on a powder keg the entire time I was in high school (I grew up in Northern Maryland, which would have been vaporized in any nuclear conflict that started). So yeah, we’re close – uncomfortably close. But we have been closer. (Not even going to mention the 1960s and the Berlin crisis and the Cuban Missiles …) And we get through it by making light of what terrifies us (watch some of the cartoons from the… Read more »
Only objection I have, is that I would rather know what happens next in Analog & D-Pad?! 😀
The only objectively valid objection.
Honestly, I’d argue now is the perfect time for these pictures– a little brevity amongst the horror, no?
But what about the Sega Saturn?
The Saturn army sank in the ocean on the way to the fight.
Yes, what about it?
Just like real life, they shot themselves in the foot and never made it anywhere.
Sega Saturn may as well have been built by Justin Hammer give its performance.
The amount of north americans discovering now that “war is bad” is astounding to me.
Your people have been murdering children for the last 75 years non stop, but now that the victims are blue eyed, now that the Other Empire is the one doing the murder, all of a sudden we must protest, and use sanctions and threaten world war.
Ah, the hypocrisy.
Yeah, with Ukrainian side full of Nazis (literal HH, 1488 Nazis, just look it up somewhere) taking entire cities hostage.
It’s so easy to be anti-war these days while being completely ignorant of watcrimes committed by ‘your’ side in the conflict. Oh, and don’t forget to kick a Russian while you’re at it, it’s the new black.
Imagine holding all North Americans responsible for 3 commenters on a web post announcing some game console war posters.
On the second drop ship is that two neo geos i see or am my eyes playing tricks on me.
Hi, where is the preorder happening? I cannot find the link.
Top right of pretty much every page it seems: https://cad-comic.com/console-war-gen-4-6/
Love the posters, can’t wait for future generations! Minor typo in the Gen 6 description, you referred to it as Gen 5. Doesn’t bother anything and I hate to nit-pick, but since these are items for sale I thought you might want to know in cases it confuses anyone else.
Hi Tim,
Did you consider to create some posters on Displate.com? I think it would be great to have metalic posters whether with console wars or with starcaster.
I’m fairly sure I’ve bought 2 sets of all your merch at this point. It’s all such high quality and enjoyable content. Thank you for all your hard work over the years. I feel bad for you having to deal with this area becoming a quagmire of people venting. Best of luck, and thank you again for all the great content.
*Edit:
Just saw that comments require approval before posting. I should have expected as much from your canny brain. Bravo.
I order these for my son on 4-24 and still have not received them..
Yay, I’m ready for the next three! Running out of wall space though…
