The Core

So another E3 comes and goes… meh.

Maybe it’s just me, but E3 carries no excitement with it anymore. I know that pre-downsizing, E3 was a shining example of ridiculous excess and industry expenditure of money and manpower… but man was it a fun shining example.

Nowadays it just doesn’t seem to have the same ‘oomph’. For me anyway. This year was especially boring. Ninety-percent of it seemed to be companies going “Hey, remember this thing we already announced and you already know about? Oh, you do? Ok, good. Just checking. Uhh… here’s some new screenshots.” Time was E3 rocked the world with new announcements. Now it seems like companies, knowing that E3 isn’t what it used to be, and just announce their stuff whenever they want, and then maybe show up at E3. If they feel like it.

One of the soundbites to come out of last week that amused me was when Shigeru Miyamoto said “Oh, Nintendo isn’t directing its E3 presentation at the ‘core’ gamer anymore.” Really? Was there anyone out there still under the impression that Nintendo was targeting core gamers anymore? At any time in, say, the past two years?

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have a problem with Nintendo being all about casual gaming (nor am I saying that casual games can not also be extremely fun games). A casual gamer’s money is just as green as a core gamer’s money, right? The 360 and PS3 clearly aren’t going after that market, so why shouldn’t Nintendo go mop up?

And that’s why they’re shitting money out of every orifice.
