The Starcaster Chronicles 10.19

August 16, 2022 by Tim

Patrons had a vote on this page. I’ll post the results with tomorrow’s page.

What appears to be a Federation scout ship is approaching Cort and crew’s camp.

  • Pack up the Aphelion and run.
  • Take up a defensive position and wait to see what the ship does.
  • Fire a warning shot with the Starcaster.

3 sounds so stupid… and would be a hilarious way to go.

With the votes we really can decide how chaotic/stupid our protagonist is.

If the original runs of voting from here are any example of how the Patrons may be voting, we’ll get *mostly* realistic choices made.

If not #2, I’d bet they aimed more for #1.

“Fire a warning shot with the Starcaster”, aka “draw a giant arrow with “all your wanted fugitives right here! also free hugs!” message”

If they can hear the ship, it is already close by and descending.
That means they have already been found.
Shooting would make everything worse.
Running would be rash and make the situation worse.
Wait and see is the most reasonable solution here.

However, didnt that violent merc steal a scout ship?
They have him outnumbered and out-starcastered.

Following Ryder might prove a tad difficult for him, considering a certain incident: https://cad-comic.com/comic/the-starcaster-chronicles-07-10/

If you mean “The Grin,” he’s been out of the picture (literally) since Speck dissolved a good chunk of his legs. I’d assume he died, or is recovering somewhere. I doubt he’d have the resources to get out of that situation and continue with the job.

It does bug me that Speck didn’t finish him off right then and there, to be safe. Doesn’t make any sense, really.

If he did survive, that would be the second time they had the chance to finish him and passed on it. The first time would have been in the Aug temple on the ice planet.

Wasn’t he the body that was partially dissolved?

No, that was just the random goons on the station that Speck resupplied at just recently.

Ethan 1.0 would have seen the ship as target practice and gone pew-pew with the Starcaster.

So, is this the Marshall looking for Cort, the federation starcaster looking for another starcaster and found Cort, or the baddie starcaster looking for a planet to destroy in a stolen federation ship??

I’m assuming it’s the Marshall we have seen. If it was not the Marshall, then showing us his investigation of Spock’s recent killing would not be needed for a narrative purpose and just needless filler. I assume the federation starcaster that the Marshall spoke to only provided information on tracking starcaster use to this sector, but would be stationed somewhere to help defend against the main Drax’ler threat. Having either starcaster going after Cort would weaken the defensive position of the federation at a time of what is most likely now War. The baddie starcaster is looking for an inhabited… Read more »

Seems more likely that he got some intel on the specific ship Cort stole, so that it could be tracked the old-fashioned way. So far it seems the starcasters themselves are effectively untrackable when not in use, and even if they were, it would be strange if back-alley gangster goons on the station knew how to track a starcaster.

The coaxial Vas-Relay cable is in his hands. You can’t just expect to take off and run without that.

Yeah running immediately after a Vas-ectomy is never a good idea.

I feel like taking a vote here isn’t the best call, because readers have more information (e.g. that the friendly Marshall is close on their trail) than Cort and the gang have. Then again, perhaps that’s intended to get voters to assume it’s him and lower their guard.

Either way, though, the voters are working with information that Cort himself doesn’t have.

Interesting point, but it seems like a very steep writing challenge since it would involve outright rejecting the scenes that show that information, and potentially using that crappy technique where things get shown out of order (I hate that, personally) One or two time-shifts are ok but some writers just jump everywhere until you just don’t even know what’s what anymore

Whether it was before when everyone was voting, or more recently when it’s just the Patreons voting: we often get to vote working with information that Cort himself doesn’t have.

2 seems like the obvious choice… 1 is at least in character… 3 seems way off, character-wise. Cort doesn’t fire on the Feds, even “warning shots.”

Quel took his *personal* craft though…. so who’s on the scout?

My vote is haul ass. Firing a warning shot will just bring hell on them, and waiting around will get them caught. Cort has a good track record of hauling ass and getting away.

I would go with “Take up a defensive position”. Apart from pointing a giant arrow at your location, opening fire with a Starcaster immediately is just a poor choice all around. Packing up the Aphelion and running is both risky and leaves Cort with no information on the situation. Also, it really marks Cort as an enemy of the Federation instead of having SOME wriggle room on that designation. With Defensive Position, there is a small risk if the scout decides to lob a missile at the ship but Cort can …… probably….. knock the missile and the scout out… Read more »
