Console War, p92

August 31, 2022 by Tim

Holy shit, it’s finally happening. PS5’s are just, like… in stock in some places. Just sitting there.

What a crazy time to be alive.

They’re still not even listed as a product on online stores where I live since they’re perpetually out of stock. They sell out in store instantly whenever a shipment lands.

I’ll stick to the superior PC gaming lol.
Where is the PC people in this whole war would love a comic where you see PC Tower generals talking about the console wars even have them talking about the console sides trying to get them onside.

The PCs are tourists who watch the consoles like a safari trip.

Eh, Xbox has that in the bag with Xbox GamePass. Sony is flirting but flailing at the moment, just like the (sadly) constantly-inferior PS Plus. Then again… I got a PC and a PS5, rather than an Xbox, because… well, I’ve got a PC, so why get an Xbox? Everything’s coming out on PC, included in XBGP, so… what’s the point?

They’ve had a few brief appearances. See Pages 65, 66, and 87 of Console wars

Oh they have been depicted a few times. Mostly as like a suburban nation that treats the console wars more like a novelty. That or they are dealing with internal conflicts between the religions of Valve and Epic.

There was also this brief stint of “The Steam” when the steam machines where a thing, but they got snuffed out pretty quick, though i could see them returning considering how the Deck is succeeding where the machines failed and providing some competition vs the consoles. Especially Nintendo whose tightening of anti-emulation tactics may be a response.

Eh. I’ll believe that Steam Deck is something worth a page in the Console War if sales ever come out that show it selling even halfway close to the rate of a console after its first few months. Valve’s got to do more than just be like, “Hey, we made this thing, it exists” to get the general public’s attention.

PCs aren’t in the console war. As a general purpose machine, they’re above it.
After all, until the day comes when you can file your taxes using your PS5 or work your office job on your Nintendo Switch, there will *always* be a demand for PCs.
No God of War or Halo or Zelda will *ever* dent that demand.

Now, phones and tablets, on the other hand…

Could be a proper arc by itself, mobile games.

  • Phone games are all pests and insect swarms, showing how much depth most of them have (little), but how many of them are out there
  • But they’re all bloodsuckers all, representing the very, VERY micro-transaction-laden mobile market.
  • And then some really big swarms of scary gribblies start to attack the PS5/XBox/Switch forces. These represent the big successes: Popcap, King, etc.
  • And and then the giant spiders the size of an Abrams Tank appears..

Could even have an arc where a “weapons manufacturer” attempts “biological warfare”, to abysmal results. (Diablo Immortal)

What the? How greedy can you get? I understand it’s gotten more expensive to manufacture these things, but Sony is a massive company. Just eat the cost increase instead of passing it on to consumers. Increasing the price two years into the generation is a pretty low move.

You’re kidding right?
The hardware is two years old at this point. They should be dropping the price, not increasing it!

More troops but the cost per unit went up outside the US market. Still: PS5 isnt doing bad internationally if certain retailers will put up stock online and sell out in a few hours…

Now do one about how the costs of this war are jacked up in Europe with an additional 50 bucks.

I just read all the episodes from the very beginning. some of them are completely incomprehensible today and refer to events that hardly anyone remembers. Unless he was part of them. Nice allegory of real wars and what they were fought for.

Well darn. now I feel like one of those old war vets who was there and wonders why the current generation just does not remember what went down.

Those Nintendo-Sega wars… I remember them well. When I signed up for the Nintendo Armed Forces, I knew what I had to do to take down the blue menace.

PC, PS5 and Series X. NGL play time is:
PC
Xbox
Phone
VR
PS5
Around here at least. Just… don’t really fire the darn thing up that often. Though, part of the console lack of love has been 7 year old 50″ tv in a room 20 feet across, but that remedies today with a fancy fancy new TV. LG G2 77 on the wall, I am.. thinking it’s time to fire up Horizon again…

Finally got a 4K HDR TV yesterday (Not LG OLED THOUGH….) Have had the PS5 since launch day. I am also thinking I need to re-play some games.

I finally got mine two weeks ago and it was still a ‘lets check in the back’ kind of deal. I got lucky and a box with two got delivered right before they opened. And now I finally get to play my copy of Horizon Forbidden West!

Even as a PC gamer seeing all of my favorite games get ported (albeit sometimes incredibly poorly) I do sometimes miss the days of cracking open a beautifully designed plastic case and feeling the plastic disk in my hand and sitting down crosslegged on the carpet, controller in hand.

I just don’t see the point of buying a PS5, especially after the prices got jacked up while PC part prices are plummeting. An excellent budget build with an i5-12400 and RTX 3060 is only $800. This price will drop even further very soon, when Ryzen 7000s, intel 13000s, and nVidia 4000s launch. The PS5, however, is getting more expensive and will cost a whopping $650 PLUS hundreds upon hundreds of dollars more in subscription fees just for the basic right to play your games online. Which is literal highway robbery. That puts the cost of a PS5 beyond $1000… Read more »

The only advantage consoles have in my opinion, is the general lack of DRM. I’m looking at you Denuvo!

Although recent news is making even that point invalid, as Denuvo is planning on putting DRM onto the Switch.

…Yeah, a bit late at this point. any hype I had had long since died and any games I wanted I can now get elsewhere. I’ll need a pretty good reason to get a PS5 now or just wait for the next generation, though I suspect by then we’ll have the same issues again. Eh, Maybe if Sony’s version of game pass was actually decent i’d get one.

Yes, Sony raised the price in many countries around the world.

Microsoft and Nintendo followed up with some easy Ws by announcing they would not be raising their prices.

What’s amusing about this is that today, I made a move that has pushed my eventual PS5 purchase from 2023 to 2025-2026. I’ll still eventually get it but the remaining games that I want to get it for (God of War/Ratchet & Clank/Spiderman/FF7R) all have earlier games in their respective series that I should play through first before I get the PS5 versions. The real push was from Stranger of Paradise. Today, I decided that it’s better to play it on my Xbox One now so, instead of getting it in 2023, I can comfortably put off a PS5 another… Read more »

You know, after the SNES had been out for two years, they’d started work on the N64.
