Sadly, didn’t get to explore my “kindness” of resurrecting one of my players…but with a demon lord as her new god unbeknownst to her >.> Covid hit and our group broke up at that time.

Unfortunately for our good DM here, One will shortly forget this kindness and derail the campaign again at the next opportunity.
If you step up to a Planar entity to protect your son and his friends, risk your very existence, your god forgives you for that whole lich thing.

This is a comic so its funny, but if I was the DM I wouldn’t do the shit eating grin. It really undercuts the dramatic moment of sacrifice and then the heroic redemption.
Three may have decided to not be quite that vengeful here, but there’s no way he would pass up a chance to make One believe, at least for a moment, “I’m totally going to make you watch as your Dad’s spirit gets devoured by a planar monstrosity” 😉
And I think the little reminder that he could, somewhat amplifies his decision to take the softer approach.
I think you’ve forgotten the context here. Three is the clear aggressor in this little tiff. Yeah the war goes back for forever, but the whole thing with his Dad in the campaign has been Three being a complete douche the entire time.
to be fair 1 has been a complete douche to 3 in this quest by repeatedly not wanting to save him. He’s just getting little payback by playing with 1 as he probably wouldn’t have let Loff get eaten anyway especially cuz they did manage to save him. Or at least we’ll assume that he wouldn’t…
My dream campaign is have the characters end not with defeating the big bad, but helping the good kaiju kill the bad kaiju, but not in fighting but finding ways to give the good kaiju an upper hand.
If you have access to the tyranny of dragons campaign/ rise of tiamat having a look at the things that debuff tiamat may be worth looking at? Some involves fighting other entities but weakening the support base/artifacts empowering the “bad Kaiju” could be fun
Yeah, I have looked at that and that is what inpsired me. Like, what would happen if they succeed in summoning tiamat, and somehow the good guys summon bahamut and the two aspects duke it out so the players have to 1) avoid the fighting, while weaking artifacts or those who summoned tiamat.
Like, what happens to the people on the ground while godzilla and kong are fighting?
That demon would know it’s beat even without trying, a simple jerk of the hand of that god will send it hurtling into the ether. Or melt it into the ground below it. This is like a Walmart security guard taking on a navy seal, not going to end well.
That’s not a god though, “merely” his envoy. My point being, it’s not as powerful as a god, so comparing to that demon, the power difference might be whatever the GM wants it to.

Ok, I can see this going in a few different directions.
Good demon vs bad demon.
Bad demon vs other bad demon, both wanting Loff for their own purposes.
Bad demon and other demon hook up and Loff is the “little blue pill”.
Demons begin to tango in a beautiful Kaiju dance.

It is actually hard to imagine something more in line with her teachings than this. So, good work, 3. You did the right thing.

These moments I genuinely dislike. You have to sit back and hear the cutscene. Not even watch it, like in a video game. You’re listening to the cutscene now. We’ve had a final fight like this. It was also a very railroaded story. Tons of super important plot-guys showed up, big awesome bads too, everyone is fighting, massive combat for the fate of the world. Characters decided to just sit back and watch at that point. Didn’t bother to even participate. It’s the same thing. Here’s a big giant super planar thing, there’s nothing you can do! It eats your… Read more »
You’re saying you’ve had a battle where your characters decided to sit back and watch (similar to how these characters decided to run away from the fight)… and you’re upset that the DM described to you the stuff you were seeing? I don’t understand that logic. I’m all for player agency, but a world where nothing happens/everything stands still unless the players is are directly involved doesn’t make any sense either. It’s the DM’s role to paint a picture of the world around you, and that includes an important fight happening in front of you that you made a choice… Read more »
No, it just came to the point where our actions became irrelevant, because it was mostly a battle between zomg so OP DMPCs and Super Big Bads. Most we could do is fight the henchmen at that point. It was a long, long track of railroading us through super thought our world, that had to happen the way DM imagined it. With possibly DM being upset we’ve gobsmacked one boss before, then the other boss that he had upped so much and made sure only or mostly utility Druid could do full damage to. With everyone else doing 1/4. Think… Read more »
But then what’s the problem now? None of those things you’re describing are happening here.
I get that you had a bad experience in your campaign, but it feels kind of unfair to blame other campaigns merely for having elements similar to the ones your DM (apparently) misused.
There are a lot of things that can happen now: yes there might be a long epic battle where you got nothing to do but can be really interesting to listen to if you have a good DM who can really get into his role as narrator. But a battle doesn’t have to last a long time. Maybe this demon is just a “guard” and not the actual ruler of this plane and not on the same level as she is and he will cower in fear. The end. The players can actually just run at this point knowing Loff… Read more »

A DM makes their players struggle.
A good DM makes the struggle meaningful.
That grin!
A kind GM? Never heard of…
They usually dwell OUTSIDE the internet and meme groups. But they very much exist.
The best DMs don’t let their players know how kind they actually are.
Sadly, didn’t get to explore my “kindness” of resurrecting one of my players…but with a demon lord as her new god unbeknownst to her >.> Covid hit and our group broke up at that time.

The DM giveth and the DM taketh away. Balance is best, the game is supposed to be fun for everyone after all.
Devotees of this particular barbarian god are known as “Crullers”, and they can be a flakey lot.
Nicely done.

I wonder Tim, in your campaigns, are you a DM or a player? 🙂
Oh, trust me. You can be a DM AND a Playa.
Amazing!
Yeah, this wasn’t about the story-telling for Three, as the DM. This was a direct message to One, “FAAFO.”
Someone has never DM’d
Half the fun of being a DM is staring your players in the eye, and saying with a slight smirk:
“You most certainly can try“

Maybe you wouldn’t, but I would. And have. And we all had a good time.
A Kaiju Big Battel be imminent?
My dream campaign is have the characters end not with defeating the big bad, but helping the good kaiju kill the bad kaiju, but not in fighting but finding ways to give the good kaiju an upper hand.
I just haven’t figured out how yet.
