Mythbusters proved that the “high ground” is a disadvantage, both guys got more hits from below than above. The ONLY reason it “worked” in the movie is because Anakin tried to jump over him instead of using his brain and swiped at Obewan’s feet/legs from below.

Good thing the demon stopped wrestling with the father’s spirit and it didn’t realize it could… just… you know… walk above him.
That demon was in “I crush you!” mode, the thought never occurred to it.

And that is how you justify saving your DMNPC insuring the mountain of muscle warrior is not chosen over your Lawful Good whiny health potion.
Though it would be badass if his dad suddenly chucked the demon over his shoulder and onto the portal, destroying it and trapping them here for awhile till they can find another portal. Would make for a fun campaign ^^
They didn’t let him die, he failed the check to clear the jump, 2 failed the check to help him, 4 might have just dropped the bag on him but 1 wasn’t trying to crush his ribcage, it was just how it went.
I understand where you are coming from, but most of the “well, we should probably bring Tobin back” talk has come from the other players. There might be some mechanic that helps the DM be impartial with his character.
One mechanic is “it is a comic” and it would be 1) weird to add a 5 just to DM and 2) boring to not have 3 involved with the shenanigans.
like, yes. we all are aware this isn’t a real campaign. We are aware that a real campaign would play differently.
You have to admit it just comes across bad that literally two pages ago Groff was pointing out how much more valuable his father was as an option between the two to revive, and suddenly this happens is my point.
And you missed the many reasons why doing so would (have) be(en) a bad idea? You’re also missing the main problem with your assertion. You’re not wrong that this outcome is an good way to keep the ‘revive Tobyn’ plot back on track, but you’re framing it as if that’s just a trick to force the party to dump the father and bring the DMPC back instead. There are two things wrong with that: One, it’s quite plausible the DM was already planning on something like this in the first place. After all, it makes more sense for the father… Read more »
He was gonna make another character, the players opted to go through the effort to bring him back.

Maybe this will allow Dad to redeem himself in the eyes of his barbarian gods.

I hope she had something a bit stronger than pointy sticks to shoot with if that’s the case, Demons by nature are magical creatures and all conventional arrows would do is piss him off and get his attention. Plus I expect the portal would close if she had gone through.
And that’s how you introduce an NPC to help a party low in members and then kill it gloriously
Quirk acquired by Groff: Demon Hater (+20% DMG to Demons, must attack Demons, if any)
It’s DND so +1d6 seems more appropriate.
Cake: It’s over, planar demon! I have the high ground!
Smart, we all know that the high ground is unbeatable … right Anakin ?
*Grumbling in Maul*
Obi-wan is actually a master of low ground, not high ground.

Alternately, it’s how you get players emotionally engaged in a side bit they only had to go on because they let a party member die fairly callously.
I mean, to be fair, they didn’t LET him die… they just helped him along with really dumb choices.
How is four consecutively horrifically bad dice rolls letting someone die?
