Well, then, the disappearing act is suddenly less impressive.

Year one of Bruce Wayne’s Super Secret Mountain Warrior Monk Training was *just* how to disappear quickly and quietly. Bruce got bonus credit for doing it with a cape.

The secret to Batman’s cape is that it gives +24 to the Batman stat, which in turn gives +3 to all stats, which include Dexterity, Agility, Stealth, Speed, and Evasion.

Her phone should’ve been fried by the EMP.

EMP blasts in general take massive amounts of power to create, and the power of the pulse falls off dramatically. The EMP of a nuclear bomb explosion won’t even reach as far as the blast wave… something that could be carried in a backpack likely wouldn’t even have an effect at 50 ft, even with slightly futuristic tech at their disposal.

Not entirely correct. An EMP device does take an enormous amount of power. However with nuclear blasts he resulting EMP would wipe out entire cities, even from a small nuclear device if detonated high in the atmosphere. With a sufficiently sized nuclear weapon you can disrupt telecommunications of half the the US by detonating miles above the ground.

It’s a comic….just enjoy it.

To be precise, any radiation (sunlight, ham radio, etc.) drops in intensity with the square of the distance from the emitter. In other words, at 10m distance you’ll get 1/100th of the radiation you receive when you’re 1m away. Which is pretty intuitive if you think that the formulas for both the surface of a sphere and the base area of a cone are proportional to r^2.

Not now, Monroe, you’re not his PR – but if in the future there’s some sort of attack on their name, or fingering them for a crime, you might suddenly find yourself as an ally or defender. It pays to make friends with the press.

Well I guess the EMP didn’t mess up the phones in the crate if it didn’t even mess up the reporter’s phone.

While you are not making a good assumption because her phone would be far away, out of range from the emp, at least you aren’t another person complaining about the same thing.

Solid metal crates are pretty impregnable Faraday cages. Like you surely realised every time you tried using your phone in the elevator.

FYI,

On the main page, the “Previous” and “First” links etc are broken. These work when directly viewing a comic but not from the main page

First and last work fine for me on firefox. If on main page it goes all the way back to 1.0 ethan/lucas on the couch (and what an art style shift that is)and if viewing comic it goes back to page 1 of A+D.

Something I haven’t seen mentioned is the fact they used a small EMP on a boat carrying new phones. They probably fried a few even if though they were turned off and are gonna get bad PR from it.

I second Tim’s comment. This has been talked about on pretty much all of the last 10 comics. General consensus is:

1) With all phones off, likely no damage
2) Shipping containers are basically giant Faraday cages.
3) The EMP was mentioned by Scott when he gave it to Ethan as being very low range.

And there’s something called a faraday cage.
I suppose a giant metal container could double as one.

A (backpack) EMC device that generates a visible aura of energy is as sience-fiction as lightsabers and phasors. That the community use the farday-cage argument is just a proof of excelent writing.

I wish that more mainstream media would put as much faith in it’s audience.

Good job Tim. Keep putting the science in science-fiction. Thumbs up.

*EMP device.

EMC is what the phones where saved by.

Actually, the reason why is generates a visible pulse of energy is probably because it is a focused blast and why it is so large is because 1. the metal cranes and stuff attracted some of the energy I guess and 2. Scott did a rush job so there is a lot of excess misdirected power being pushed outwards that isn’t useful but just…looks like something I guess.

Well, no.

Ionizing 25-30m of air would indicate a field of atleast a few million volts. Tens of millions. Ethan would be charcoal.

That is where science and science-fiction in this case parts ways, but we all got the point, and some artistc freedom and effects is just right.

(and sure, some techno-babble could explain the glow, and Tim could even cannonize a mechanic for the glow, but there is in this case no need – the glow of an EMP is irrelevant for the story, and it made a cool panel. )

I second both these notions. It is, as you said, most likely an overexaggeration (Science…fiction!) Thanks for the explanation, it was very much appreciated 🙂

Well TECHNICALLY they already banged as the EMP made an explosion and therefore a bang.

The re-imagined ctrl-alt-del is fine BUT … could you please find an occasional 5-10 piece ark of original universe. I miss them, the quirky fwb gamer storyline… the petite d-pad (tears) .. just … please.
