Console War, p97

October 13, 2023 by Tim

PS5 Slim incoming. Looks… fine. Great if you don’t have a PS5, but if you do… no real incentive to “upgrade.” It’s a little smaller, I guess.

The split plates and option to buy the digital version, and later decide to add on the BluRay player is pretty cool though. Base PS5 should have had that option.

Buying the slim digital costs more than buying the disc version. Cool option you like paying more.

It’s only like 30% smaller and you are essentially paying more, especially if you want a stand for it to stand up perfectly.

Last I heard the PS5 Slim was more expensive than the regular PS5 so definitely not worth getting it in my opinion unless the smaller size is a necessity.

Same price for less PS5 (no BR). Awesome deal,,,,

Digital Slim is 450, not 400. Also, vertical stand sold “separatly”, so same price for physical gets you less functionality.

You are just getting now the price increase that we got in August 2022. If you look at Europe and UK prices, the prices are exactly the same as the fatter version, and I’m pretty sure it’s the same trend in the rest of world. The weird thing however is the price gap between BR reader and digital. In the US it’s now $50 instead of $100, but in the old world we keep the same gap (100€ / 90£) as previously. And the price of BR reader add-on is matching that : $80 vs 120€ which is a terrible… Read more »

Not an upgrade at all. This is how it should have been from the get go. You can’t even use the separate BR drive with the current Digital edition either, heck, they even upped the price of the new Digital edition by $50….totally wrong moves all around with this “update”.

Yeah, it’s like Sony is intentionally setting themselves up to end up losing the next generation of consoles.

Out of curiosity;

Why would anyone prefer one without a reader?
I’ve always been against the online shopping idea from the get go.
You pay (often full price) for something that’s never really yours and, once the service ceases, you lose everything.

Want to play your favourite game again in 10 years?
Good luck.

Having the disk doesn’t really prevent that. Half of them require online access to a running server anyhow even for a single player game.

Main argument: It presumably saves money to not have one, so if you’re unlikely to ever use a reader it’s not a bad choice to skip on it.

You’re not wrong about the danger of service cancellation causing you to lose access, but that can be a fairly safe, calculated risk.

safe? calculated? Its a Guarenteed loss of games down the road. Don’t believe me? Lemme hold up nintendo as a poster child. Or xbox. ‘Wii market down.. games GONE. Nintendo DS. Market deleted. GAMES GONE. 360. market down, Games GONE’… will they come back for a future console? parent company knows, but no one else. Considering how they barely converted games from the 360 to the ONE, or, how playstation 3 games won’t play on the 4.. and 4 won’t play on the 5… Want to play that favourite game from the WII? sorry.. it was digital only, never gonna… Read more »

Even with the disc, you’re still subject to Sony’s online infrastructure for getting the patches to make the games functional or install your DLC. It’s just wasteful plastic and an added annoyance for disc swapping.

I have no problems playing games from 30+ years ago on PC, so I guess it’s just a console issue.

Eventually it will come to pass that the PS5 is rendered obsolete by the PS6 and above, or whatever they will eventually be called. And the ultimate fate of obsolete and abandoned consoles and games is simply jailbreaking, so that you can get those games preserved long after their makers move on to other things. From my understanding, sometimes fans of certain online games have even come together to remake the online servers or other online services of games that had been abandoned and shuttered. This is why Jailbreaking old consoles seems to be the ultimate fate of old consoles.… Read more »

I can’t think of a single game older than 7 years (and only one that is that old but its still not on a disc) that I would want to play again with all the fantastic new ones to experience. Disc’s are an unnecessary clutter I am very glad to get rid of.

Persona 5 was released in 2016 – still incredibly worth (re)playing today. Of course, that’s 7 years exactly so could be the one you’re thinking of.

The one I meant is Destiny 2, but that is kind of cheating since it’s a live service game =)

“Want to play your favourite game again in 10 years?” I don’t own a Sony console, but I’m pretty sure that digital purchases made 10 years ago on the PS4 carried over just fine to nowadays PS5. And after showing they can do it between PS4 and PS5, I expect Sony to keep on doing it on the future, so in 2033 you will be able to use a 20 year old digital purchase from 2013 on the PS6… On the Xbox side, the Xbox Series X can use some digital purchases made 18 years since they have a part… Read more »

Just got two PS5s for the esports lab here at school. Wish I’d waited a little longer – these Slims would have fit the cabinet better.

I’ll be honest: I’d have pulled the trigger during several moments of weakness over the years, or my wife would’ve picked it up for me as a gift, if not for the fact that the PS5 is SO huge (and that I was convinced a Slim would eventually arrive). I’m not as much of a gamer as I was in years past, but this is literally why they don’t have a purchase from my household yet. That original model is monstrous.

I don’t have one because I don’t like the aesthetic, particularly the white plates.
Good job those are consistent with the slim, or I’d have bought it to play FF7R2 and Spider-Man…
I know you can get skins now, but for the amount of money being shelled out, buying skins as well seems ridiculous.

You can just airbrush the plates yourself – if it’s really that important. Me I don’t care much for how a console looks. The important thing is how it plays.

Channeling Full Metal Jacket on this one, so good!

Curious though, shouldn’t the older drill sergeants be older models? Having them the same version as the cadets makes them seem the same age.

If the price of the digital + disk was equal to the price of the full fat version, I’d agree it was cool. As is, it’s a nice option for some people, but it’s also an option that’s going to screw people out of an extra $30 as well.

Game systems always come out with a “slim” version, it’s mostly a marketing scheme, you lose things like backward-compatibility, cooling, and space for expansion with it. Not always of course, but PlayStation did it more than once. I had 3 consoles of the first one, The first one died due to hyperactive kids, the second one, the laser eye broke loose (I have a hunch but never proved who was poking at it) and I got the mini one once they grew up. I had 47 games just collecting dust so why not? I got the PS2 mini, and the… Read more »

The drama about the PS5’s size has always seemed odd to me. Can’t imagine there were that many gamers so strapped for space that this was a real issue – or that everyone suddenly hated the “Portal” aesthetic all of a sudden. It fits in the exact same sized slot in my setup as the PS4Pro does.
