I don’t know how or when this really happened, but I have somehow become that guy that volunteers for shit as pertains to any of my kids’ many activities. Coach, board member, social media coordinator, prop-builder, uniform designer, etc.
I am suddenly wearing a stupid number of hats because I cannot seem to keep my stupid mouth shut. This weird desire to be helpful and, truthfully, try to better the programs my kids participate in, means every season I have one or two extra (unpaid) jobs.
I would not be surprised if my wife had to resort to this to save me from myself at this point.

Same, it’s a curse….
Think about this: You have an infinity (as far as our lives go) that you could get into. It could be for something for your kid’s benefit, for your own hobbies, something because nobody else will do it, and because your neighbourhood needs you, etc. But you need sleep or you do not create your best work. Your work needs you. I’ve seen people let go from not being available at work when everyone else is in crunching for a release. You married your partner (or if you just have one, that still counts) – you owe them. The relationship… Read more »
what makes you think she hasn’t already done it and just wiped your memory?
Me on any game guide projects. Sure, I’m PAID to only cover collectibles, but while I’m here…
yeah same same…
My wife always, constantly, everytime, reliably says “do not dare to lift your hand” when I go to anything like school meetings, city council meetings or whatever parent-only-meeting that involves any activity.
DO NOT GET INVOLVED – Let normally employed people with a 9-5 do that.
The question is: Do I put up my hand without checking with your wife? If the answer is yes, then this is where you will find how hard a skillet is applied to your head.
Skillet issue.
I think it’s because Tim likes having that many hats. lol
Be grateful – she just saved you from yourself. 😉
We call it ‘Helium Hand’. Just tie your hands to your belt or a lead weight.
My father has “a servant’s heart.” My mother often wishes he didn’t.
Ah yes, the masculine desire to be helpful even if you realistically don’t have any spare time to pick up additional projects.
Been there, it’s the dadzone
Reminds me of those old Nap Time formula gag commercials.
It’s called Helium Hand syndrome – one of my friends has the mantra “I am a good person. I am a good person even if I don’t volunteer (and I can run a Con from the bar…)”
It’s even harder when you sit on your hands at the start, watch literally no-one else do anything, and then realise that if you want this thing to succeed, you are now going to have to help out with a fraction of the time needed to do a good job!
Why not??
I get it. I started out just doing elementary school career days. Then I started running the Watch DOGS program. I did a much better job when my son joined Cub Scouts as I just handled recruitment. We moved in his 2nd year of Webelos and as soon as he was crossing over, I got asked to take on Scoutmaster for the troop because the current one wanted to step down and the alternatives at the time probably weren’t a good fit for today’s youth…they weren’t as understanding of the emotional range of today’s youth. I did that for 2… Read more »
Your wife might be in the Assassin’s Brotherhood, given how she came out of nowhere and caught you that quickly.
When it’s getting involved with your kids stuff, she’ll find it hard to complain. But be sure to give the external volunteering a firm back seat.
That’s just typical good-dad-reflexes. But, you must remember who truly owns your time 😉
Sadly tim was not seen from again for the PTA meetings 😀
My wife is the same. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve affectionately/exasperatedly told her “You didn’t have to say yes”.
