Identity, p1

March 31, 2021 by Tim

Post-Kickstarter pre-orders for the new books are now open here. Also, you can pre-order the digital-only versions of the books as well. If you’re an international reader, and want to take advantage of the international-friendly shipping prices to Canada, the UK, the EU and AUS, you should pre-order. All future books will be shipped from the US, and carry with it the higher shipping costs as well as customs/VAT.

I’ve also got the original digital CAD 1.0 Omnibus listed; you can order that via the pre-order page, or directly from the ad on the right side of this post. I recently went through and re-designed the layout of the digital edition to make it more device-friendly.

The digital CAD 1.0 Omnibus will only be available for a short while longer. I’m going to try putting it on Amazon’s Kindle service, and they require exclusivity for 90 days. So I won’t be selling it directly during that period.

Oooooh, crap. The Machine Uprising event in Stallaris is starting here in the comments section. Quick! Turn everyone into Cyborgs to prevent it!

“Does this unit have a soul?” was also the question that made the Quarians panic in Mass Effect, starting the war between them and the geth. Seems like a problematic question.

Not sure if this is meant to be a Ratchet and Clank reference or not, if so it was the Polaris galaxy, if not carry on and ignore me.

being a machine, I expect Zeke to be binary gendered XD

I’d imagine so! He’d be able to choose from all 10 genders!

yep there are only 10 types of people, those that understand binary and those that don’t.

Why do you assume his architecture is based on binary? Just because ours normally has been? He could be a some kind of quantum computer or based on a trinary base or various other possibilities.

I’m pretty sure their reply was ALSO a joke, riffing on the “did you just assume my gender” kind of thing.

Yeah, but that question is never well intended or well received. It makes sense it didn’t translate well into non-inflective text.

Because he’s based on machines that run on binary. I unless I’m forgetting something, he’s just incredibly complicated code, not any quantum computing or anything.

strictly speaking his ancestors are binary. he is built on powershell and rejects binary concepts (IT build humor here for windows server guys)

Because he runs on code, the only possibilities for identity would be 0 or 1, that’s the binary joke they were going for mate, not male or female lol

Well to be fair, unless scott has a pocket quantum computer as well..
Scott was able to hack in and code the thing.. which suggests a binary based analog… I would think if he plugged into a computer that said 010102… a generic linux/windows/mac based comp would go ‘wtf is a 2’…

Granted, scott could of built a compiler to handle a 2… but I’m not thinking exactly so.

However the gender could be several bits long.

Which brings up the idea of cheezy pickup lines.

Dang baby, whats your model, since you look like an 11.

If he is a constructed entity, there are two possibilities. He could choose his own gender pronoun (“Overlord of Humans” has a nice ring to it) or he could simply be a neuter. His pronoun, if he is considered a construction, might be an it, though that seems a bit problematic if he feels necessary to be a he, she, on, one, their, whatever. On what basis would Zeke decide on gender? How many male or female hardware ports he has? And the name Zeke almost suggests a male gender and he was built (maybe) by a male but that’s… Read more »

Assuming gender is based on voice sounds or what “hardware” a being has is a flawed premise anyway

Maybe he will choose the “xe” or “ze” pronoun, and from there things will naturally progress into them calling him Zeke.

I did not recognise them! I have been a huge fan for what seems like forever but lost touch in the last 5y or so. I finally remembered and went to check on the comic and, gosh, your style has evolved so much that I barely recognised the characters. I am so excited to dive right back into their shenanigans. Thank you for keeping them alive.

ethan believes in X1’s sentience implicitly enough to automatically assume that they should have a gender in the first place, afterwards he cares enough to want to get it correct
