I know I’m not the only one who tried that code.

That does not appear to be a valid PSN download code! I have not tried it, but I know what to look for!

For those who don’t get it: people have pointed out that the delayed release schedule for public comics means that timely comics related to certain gaming news come out later when they’re not as relevant. To resolve this, Tim has started making comics about future games, so they’ll be relevant when the comic come out. Unfortunately, it’s still a work in progress, and this comic came out too early to coincide with the announcement of GTA 7. Hopefully these issues will be resolved in the future as Tim’s clairvoyance improves.

If I owned my own game store I’d 3D print a middle finger with rockstar’s logo on it and the code attached to it.

“Store promo. You get a keychain that reminds you what they think of you.”

If you owned a game store you’d be doing everything you can to get more people off amazon and gamestop and steam and in through your doors to buy any physical object, whether it’s a disc, paper code, or funko pops, and the release of the most widely anticipated game of the decade so far, whether you personally enjoy the game or not, would be a welcome relief from the constant near-drowning financial experience of trying to make a small retail business work in 2026. Showing a middle finger to your customers is not a great idea to get them… Read more »

Same. It’s like watching people complain about a match while you stand in a wildfire. I am pretty sure steam even changed their stance so games you bought are no longer owned, just so if they collapsed, they don’t have to guarantee access to games. Fun hostage situation.

Oh I’ll still have access to my PC games if Steam collapses. It’s not stealing, it’s reclamation. 🏴‍☠️

Like Gabe said, it’s a service problem. If the service sucks again, we know what to do.

That has always been Steam’s position.

When I reviewed Sin Episodes 1 for Gamefaqs so very long ago, I mentioned what I called Steam’s “Draconian” copy protection at the time.

Sure, Steam has done a lot of PR work since those days but let’s not pretend that Gaben’s store has EVER said that you will continue to have access to the games if Steam collapsed.

If steam collapsed today, I would still have every game I’ve downloaded. Not one of them require steam to function.

In fact steam has no bearing on if you own a game or not, the game makers and publishers decide if your buying a licence to access the game, a copy or something else.

That biscuit and piece of paper still eats too much into their profit.

The most cost-effective method I have seen is for some prepaid digital currencies.
On the shelf, you see a small card printed on thick paper. When you go to check out, the cashier scans the bar code and the card can go right back to the shelf, while your redemption code is printed on the receipt.

So the publisher is printing one card that will be used for hundreds/thousands of purchase, and the paper that contains the code is from the store itself.

Even that cuts into their margins too much. The most cost effective method is for the publisher to do literally nothing, and tell customers “eh, go buy PlayStation, Xbox, or Steam wallet cards from retailers if you want to buy something in a brick and mortar store” Although I have to wonder why they even need a physical card for what you described. You could just tell the employee “I want to buy GTA VII” and they do the transaction without scanning a card. Make it a fast food style giant touch screen kiosk if you want the customer to… Read more »

The ironic thing is sometimes I’m more willing to buy just the game case with no game in it than anything

GTA 5 had a dvd with a download client on it. And somehow noone cared. Oh and this download client had some fault / bug because after 15 minutes it disconnected internet in my house. 5 minutes later it came back, download resumed, 15 minutes later again. My internet provider had no idea what’s going in. I mean guys game here, connected their laptops to router, checked stuff and concluded they have no idea. Rockstar tech support was crap because I was talking to a bot. “Did you try restarting your PC?” I JUST TOLD YOU I DID! Took around… Read more »

I’m just super-sad the PC version won’t be out initially. Never been a console gamer. Love my mouse and keyboard. And ALT+TAB so I can do other things, too.

Ok, is it just me or was someone else expecting a hidden meaning or joke in the download code.

The fact som people purchase a freaking download code inside a box instead of buying the game on the online service makes me think mankind needs a reset.

We have saying in Finland relating to this, “tyhmä ei ole se joka kysyy, vaan se joka maksaa” (“The fool is not the one who asks, but the one who pays”).

so in here; Fool isn’t one asking money for fortune cookie containing a download code, but the paying for it.

Still has some room for improvement.
I think the next (or the next after) iteration would be – you pay money and the salesman whispers you the code twice (three times if it is Premium or Ultimate edition). You have to memorise or write it down if you wish.
That’s it. No expense on printing, cookies or any such nonsense.

I wonder which expires first? The cookie or the code…

I think paying for the download code itself may not be TOO bad, If I am allowed to download the installer. Then I can cloud it, save it, or whatever to make copy of it and safeguard it.
But it’s definitely an issue when the game itself requires constant connection or if the company can unilaterally decide we no longer have access to the game we purchased.

You know what’s nasty is with the PS5 being jailbroke and able to get games for free through it (heard people getting Wolverine without paying for it this way). I wonder if this is going to hurt GTA6’s sales? Because you aren’t getting the GTA6 Online, just the campaign.
