Isn’t the paladin a GMPC? It’s not the players’ fault for making that conclusion when you told them there’s no way across.
That’s why GM characters should be “limited” to playing Gandalf-like characters where their fore-knowledge and interactions are somewhat limited…limited-ish.
OR they are the type who doesn’t interact much with the rest of the party. Pretty common thing to do. So if the story seems to be falling flat they start nudging or intentionally doing things to force the characters to do stuff. Like he starts drinking heavily then gets violent so they are forced to contain or join in lol.
Or, say, an enigmatic mage who just graduated from being an apprentice or something who has a common goal, gets attached and winds up being mostly silent, but fairly important

You know, I’m the guy they shove off cliffs because there’s a path, except there wasn’t.

Messing with the DM character, tsc tsc Player 2. That is a fine tactic to insure that the next door you open will contain a roll check to see if 3 trolls with dildo shaped clubs are behind.

History will soon repeat itself, and Two won’t be so quick to use his Levitate spell.
Raiders is quite old. It’s time to subvert the subversion.
Raiders? That’s from Last Crusade… 😉
Player 2 had to cast Levitate, because he hasn’t learned Magic Refrigerator, yet.

His character saw a dead end, because his character has the same information as all of the other characters.
As GM, yes, he knew there was a path, but left it to the other players to figure it out.
