lol they don’t want to coax him into custody, which means they want to forcibly take him
the guy with an artefact affixed to his arm that could take out an entire planet
I don’t see how any of this could go wrong XD

It’s hardly an ideal solution, but what else can they do at this point? The diplomatic approach has failed. Since Cort apparently won’t listen to reason, more drastic measures are needed to resolve this.

To be fair, Cort was a little bit too unconscious to listen to reason, and prior to that Ulogg violated orders and went weapons free to capture (or kill) Cort. One could reasonably argue that the diplomatic approach was severely compromised before Quel even arrived on the scene to attempt it.

In short, the reason they’re in this situation at all is because they keep stepping on their own feet in these encounters and then heaping the failure on the one guy who basically wasn’t even there for it.

The thing, though, is it really doesn’t matter whether Cort was conscious or not conscious. It doesn’t matter in this case what’s fair or not. If there was a dude in the US who, say, accidentally swapped phones with a US President, and that phone had a “Nuke A Country” app right next to the “Twitter” app, maybe, MAYBE the feds might send out a guy to try to diplomatically talk to him and get him to switch the phones. But if he just disappeared into somewhere in the American Southwest? Was actively evading police and denied an offer for… Read more »

That seems a bit harsh. The Feds are hardly the only reason the situation escalated as it did, everyone had their part in that. Cort and Speck started the chaos when they wrecked half the station as soon as they saw any Feds. Ulogg and his ships only got involved because they got attacked by Grins mercenary buddies. (#UloggDidNothingWrong.) There’s plenty of reasonable explanations and mitigating circumstances of course, but none of that really changes anything about the situation. Cort has a superweapon that is too dangerous (and too important) to have running loose. He’s wrecked the last three places… Read more »

If diplomacy wants to arrest you for having blamed you for a thing you didn’t do, your definition of “listening” might not include “and obey”

Yeah like

What else could you do to capture a person with a weapon capable of destroying star fleets?

Use violent force, that should work nicely.

On the other hand, you people are capable of following a single ship, but you can’t find a FLEET? And then you put all your efforts, again, into finding a single person on a single ship, not a massive probably hostile fleet?
What is wrong with your priorities?

The same issue that has them in this position. They act and declare. They do not listen or evaluate. Note that a captain reinterpreted his orders to seize with force because he felt like it? They either won’t look or don’t care. Super easy to put up an enemy of the state and hunt a man down. But actually try and be reasonable? An olive branch that maybe is not coming from a heavily armed ship? Nah that diplomacy stuff is for suckers. . .

It’s almost like they don’t give a shit about the fleet and are instead trying to obtain an ultimate weapon for their own sake…

You’re reinterpreting events to match your own argument. Ulogg didn’t make any such declaration until after it became clear that he was suddenly under attack. Yes, he did likely move several people to the station (unless the federation just has people everywhere), but all of that still falls under ‘observe and report.’ Sure, he’s likely also setting up a contingency plan, but this is a man with the power to melt a planet. It’s reasonable precaution. Whereas Cort and crew have shown multiple times that they’d far more go rogue, avoid the Federation, and take their own chances. Honestly, if… Read more »

Space is a big place and (earth::2020::we)’re not yet sure that we’ve found all planets in our solar system yet. Even if a hostile fleet would have a big red alert light: If it teleported to the rim of our solar system, we would be alerted 19 hours after the fact (in newton’s physics). If that fleet arrived from the opposite side of the sun, we’d notice it by being fired at. Possible jump points from a well-known starting point with traceable signatures are few, especially if you know about the mission. Also there is a starcaster. We do see… Read more »

I suspect the comments are going to go off on the Federation but we had MULTIPLE opportunities to end this properly so we shouldn’t be surprised we’ve tipped over into enemy of the state territory.

Yeah, this is exactly why I hate being right about the predilections of the voters, on a pretty consistent basis.

A little weird people are so ready to trust the Federation, when just a national government is already going to be pretty corrupt. Can’t imagine the level a Galactic government would be at. I think no matter what had happened, Cort would have been declared a political “persona non grata”. Can you really believe they would allow a former military member that was publicly drummed out for criminal activity to keep the potentially world ending super-weapon? That they would care enough to find a solution that wasn’t cut off his arm, or just kill him and be done with it?… Read more »

I don’t trust the Feds. But I trust Quel. And now the voters have pushed him out of any position to help Cort, further isolating him from options to emerge from this with his arm, or head, attached.

Yeah, trusting Quel is one thing but remember, he has limited influence in the Federation. How much do you want to bet that if they want Cort to do something he doesn’t like, Quel would be replaced and someone more in line with their thinking would be put into place.

It’s not like Cort doesn’t have leverage, what with a planet shaping device attached to his arm. He can level a fleet, so it makes zero sense to make him feel betrayed by reassigning Quel.

Doesn’t matter though, voters somehow think that they can outrun TWO Galactic Superpowers AND a giant criminal cartel. I highly doubt it’s possible so Cort just lost his only leverage for zero gain.

I wouldn’t say zero gain. We expect the gains to be learning how to use the starcaster, which seems like everything at this point. Without this knowledge, whichever faction finds him first will just take it from him. Being able to defend himself will be pretty important, going forward.

I trust Quel to do what he can to help Cort, within reason.

I don’t trust Quel to put reason aside, put his life and his career and his crew aside, forsake the Federation, in order to help Cort if it becomes clear that the Federation is making a grave mistake.

And that makes all the difference.
