The Starcaster Chronicles 14.09

February 27, 2025 by Tim

We talked about some of the potential changes facing the comic in the comments already, but I’ve made a more detailed post that can serve as a hub for discussing it.

Little odd that they’d say that it had been taken, given that most everyone thought it was *already* 2:2 and not 2:1.

Feds gained one (Cort’s) and lost one (Danton’s), and the Drangalex gained one (Danton’s), so all that really happened is reality matching propaganda. Why announce that their propaganda was a lie all along?

I may be misremembering, but I didn’t think the 2:2 was Federation propaganda, but the Drangalex lying about having the Starcaster that Cort found. If the Federation had know they were at a 2:1 Starcaster advantage all this time, they would have been more aggressive in their approach, rather than keeping things at a stalemate.

2:2 was a Drangelax lie that even the Federation believed to be true until it was proven otherwise. Plus they’re addressing Federation solders right now, and they were already aware of the score shifting to 3:1. It only makes sense to let them know that it really is 2:2 now.

Keeping their troops up to date on losing not only a high ranking officer but the super weapon that was attached to him seems like it’d be really important news to share with everyone.

Over 50% ship loss for the Dranglaex in that fight means they’ve lost over just a 3rd of their fleet

They now have two starcasters and have denied the enemy one starcaster, so they’re not going to be shot at by three starcasters in the immediate future.

Tactically I’d call it a win for the Dranglaex even if losing a third of their fleet is really, really bad

But many more of these kind of pyrrhic victories and they won’t have a fleet left

From Nyra’s perspective, this is exactly why Cort shouldn’t have joined the Federation.

Why do you say that? Actual question.

For three reasons: 1. She considers that the Federation is rotten from the inside. This person just said that he doesn’t know how the Dranglaex knew the starcaster was on board this specific ship. That means betrayal from the inside. 2. Cort for sure will be thrown in an active conflict where Dranglaex have higher chances to win. 3. If Dranglaex win, they will have more starcasters for other galaxies – Nyrah’s argument was that while Cort may think he must fight to save this galaxy, if he fails, he gives a very powerful weapon to Dranglaex to fight other… Read more »

Why? Dranglaex taking a second Starcaster to cleanse the galaxy is bad no matter what. And Cort taking it and ‘hiding’ will do nothing to help. If anything, that would help Dranglaex cleansing the galaxy faster while Cort and Nyrah think they are ‘doing good’ by doing nothing.

Key words are ‘from Nyrah’s perspective’. There’s three big things here: A: The Federation is not capable of protecting even its Starcasters. B: The Federation took a massive loss, and is very likely to lose this war. C: The Federation is now going to need Cort to take a more active role in the war, instead of (ideally) mostly being protected in the backlines. All of those are Very Very Bad News for keeping Cort’s Starcaster safe. From a galaxy-wide perspective, you’re not wrong that joining is a good call. But for Nyrah, the main priority has always been ‘keep… Read more »

Can you pan down a little bit in the last frame? I think we are missing reaction of one of main protagonists.

The purple headed red crystal alien way in the back is what got me laughing more because they can barely see over the bald green guy in front of them lol

I don’t think people would find it safe to crowd around him. 😛

It only makes me more uncomfortable now that you say it. A creature at crotch height that can dissolve anything it touches with a super acid? I’ve bumped into some of those small traffic bollards to some agony when I was younger. This steps it up a notch.

Keep that shield up Speck. We’ll all rather have a knot of pain at our crotch than dissolving crotch…

On the other hand, Speck did mention to Cort they had some nifty cybernetics these days.

Actually, I pretty much know his reaction:

“Meh. I told you we should have gotten out when the gettin’ was good.

Seems like there would be cameras watching the bridge to show exactly what happened.

Probably sabotaged… or files too damaged after the boarding

Yeah if I were raiding a ship in a covert operation I sure wouldn’t be leaving security files/camera intact. Apart from the primary objective that would be a priority to damage or delete entirely so that our tracks were covered.

Probably. I’d imagine such recordings are part of the information they’re scouring the ship for.

It’s been months for us, but the Federation has only just found the body (maybe an hour ago?). It takes time to review all the relevant footage and get the full picture.

And not to mention, telling them it was an enemy suicide bomber who managed to pass enough security clearances to get posted on a capital ship undergoing a sensitive mission might end up breeding paranoia amoung the federation forces.

So I cant help but laugh how the purple red headed crystal alien is barely above the taller bald green guy it turned this from a somber comic to an ending with lolz to me tim

Question is, why were they using a starcaster bearer as part of a recon mission? That’s pretty explicitly not the type of mission you send your superweapons on, it’s the mission type you send other people on so you can know where to deploy your superweapon.

The Federation might be the less evil faction here, but they’re clearly not the more tactically competent one

Would be a decent question, if it hadn’t already been answered ages ago: The plan was to use the Starcasters to detect the Dranglaex caster (and by extension, the Dranglaex fleet they’re frantically looking for). There’s literally nobody else they could have sent to do what they were trying to do. And the method did actually work, it’s how La’Ni happened to run into Cort (instead of the Dranglaex she was looking for). There is a better question of whether they should’ve sent more ships, but that’s a lot harder to answer. They probably still need as many ships as… Read more »

True, but it’s also a big gamble that bit the Federation in the butt. I can see the guy who came up with this idea getting fired. Because you know people are going to be questioning why such a valuable weapon was put out there with little protection.

It wasn’t put out there with little protection. It was put out there on a big ship filled with soldiers. Lots of protection. The Federation only lost because of spies and a sneak bomb attack.

Ah right I forgot about the casters detecting casters thing. Such is the struggle when there’s big gaps between installments of this series, can be difficult to remember all of the everything.

I’m surprised they’re willing to go public on this loss so quickly. If they’re telling the rank-and-file, it won’t be long before civilians know and then complete chaos starts breaking out.

“Totally get it, and honestly, it makes sense. I use AdBlock (because ads suck), but I love the comics—especially Ethan and Lucas & the gamers, though all your work is great. So I guess it’s time to actually support instead of just lurking for free.
How do I sign up? Just log in, or is there more to it? Maybe it’s obvious to everyone but me, but if not, making it super easy to join would be great. Either way, I’m in!”

I noticed something, the only person NOT looking at the screen is the blue guy in the back row, exposed gem brain. He’s looking at the purple guy in front with the glowing white eyes. Either gem brain is acting suspicious, or he’s suspicious of the purple guy…
Interesting.

Starcasters can theoretically create. Could he make a new body for her?
