Game of the Year contender. That about sums up God of War so far.
I am blown away by this game, and I’d love to talk more about it once I’m further along, but wow that menu text size. They even patched in an option to increase (ie, magnify) the text size, and it barely made a difference.
And that’s a shame, too, because the game is dripping with cool tidbits of norse world-lore, as written from Atreus’ (AKA: Boy) perspective. Some of it is a little… weak. Tips against certain enemies along the gist of “These bad guys like to use attacks. Perhaps if my father blocked with his shield, he could block their attack.” Like, thanks for the heads up, bud.
But there is a lot of great stuff to digest here, but every time I hop into the menus, I feel like my eyes have to take a second to adjust and focus, prepping themselves to decipher the tiny text. It’s like I’m taking an eye exam and being asked to read the bottom row.
Still, not denting my enjoyment of the game. If you have a PS4, it’s a must-play.
More on Dad of War later this week.
I suspect the in-game text was designed for 4K TVs (meaning those who are still using 1080p will have a hard time reading the text). Dead Rising on 360 had a similar issue where text was smaller on SD TVs but looked fine on an HD TV.
Now magine, that 1080p IS HD 🙂 SD is 240p or 360p… 4K is 4K.
Reminds me of when I first picked up Skyrim on 11/11/11. I thought for sure there was something wrong with the game, or that there must be a patch coming up, or something. After all, I could read the text in Oblivion fine on my tube TV; why would Skyrim be any different?
In the end, I wound up buying a few extra cables and connecting the 360 to my computer monitor. Playing for that long while sitting at a desk convinced me that I’m just never going to be a PC gamer.
Oh I did that too on Skyrim. It was actually my impetus to go buy an HD TV.
I remember that. It was one of the things that prompted me to get myself a 1080p TV at the time.
Nope – got a nice big 4K myself – text is still tiny, even with the patch
Not an unlikely suggestion, but on the other hand (as someone who is a programmer and who has worked on video games as well as with a many people doing UIs), a lot of programmers (esp game programmers) are young. They haven’t hit their 40s where the eyes start to go. They can see 8 point characters just fine whereas those of us aging might like 14 point or more (depending on font). UI design can also be visually mucky (in terms of picking out the text vs background or the use of blending in ways that makes the text… Read more »
Just so you can appreciate a bit of irony: One of the worst types of software as far as having UI elements where either text is stuck at 8-10 pt sizes or where you cannot resize at least some of the text is….. drum roll please….. ….software development platforms and IDEs. Most allow some customization in editor windows, but often the menu text, the button text, and many other bits of text in debuggers or in popup dialogs is not resizable. It’s getting better over time, but again, the people who do the UIs are trying to cram so much… Read more »
Funny you mention that game. It was THE Game that forced me to exchange my old faithful tube monster for a first generation full HD LG. Worth it. Dead rising was one of the real next generation definers.
They just released a patch yesterday that should have made the text bigger.
dude he said that but it still isnt big enough
Indeed.
Yes, nice with him writing all those things. Shame it is just pulled out of a dark crevice when it comes to the actual norse mythology.
Dude, it’s a video game, not a history class. Relax XD
ha Tim nice one
I bet you complained all through Thor: Ragnarok, too.
HELA ISN’T THE GODDESS OF THE DEAD!
IT’S *HEL*!
AND SHE LIVES IN NIFELHIEM AND THERE’S Níðhöggr AND AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I wonder how would war map of Console Wars would look now in strip series? This year surely had big changes happening.
At least it wasn’t like what happened when Nintendo let loose a FFI-VI re-release back in the ‘Cube days. At that point, even if just for a minute, it was like Kefka was rending the world asunder once more.
But then they realized that was the HANDHELD war, and so no one cared in the Console wars.
He’s not scowling. That’s just a Jersey smile.
Somehow, I’ve never played any God of War game, but they have always looked incredibly fun. Should I play this game anyways, without playing the previous ones? Haha. I’ve seen friends play the previous ones so I kinda know the gist of what the games are about (angry guy betrayed by the gods, goes around fighting gods in epic fashion).
Absolutely. It helps if you know the gist of Kratos’ backstory, but you absolutely do not need to have played the previous games.
I’ve seen a few reviews saying it’s even better if you’ve never played the previous ones…don’t know that I agree with that, but I can see why they might say it.
When I hit previous on this, it goes back to the March 30th post “Love is stronger than pee”.
That’s how the archive works. Here’s more info: https://cad-comic.com/comics-reclassified/
That’s a very useful link, I missed it somehow. According to that page, the green buttons at the top and bottom should take me to Friday’s comic though? Is that correct? And the left and right buttons next to the comic itself should navigate to the previous/next comic in that classification?
However, both sets of buttons are taking me to the March 30th post.
If you are on the front page, the green buttons will navigate through all archives. And by front page I mean all you see in the URL is cad-comic.com
If you see the name of the comic in the URL, then you are already INSIDE one of the archives, and you will only navigate forward and backward within that archive.
Perfect. That works sir. Thank you for the timely help.
Quiet little nitpick: Kratos’ eyes are either a light green to amber brown color, not blue. >.>
Yeah, the reference pic I was looking at made them look blueish.
By the way, I meant to say this earlier but I forgot
Like a wise man once said,
“Now let’s see what Cort’s up to”
Hearing Christopher Judge’s voice in my brain, I’d bet anyone who’ve watched SG1 would see Daniel Jackson asking Teal’c the same question.
“I am not scowling, Daniel Jackson. It is the expression of Kree’Nok Tah. We use that on disobedient Jaffa children to motivate them.”
lol funny this morning I realised who the voice actor was. “I know this voice from somewhere, but where?” …
The closest I’ve ever come to playing a God of War game is Dante’s Inferno, and I am entirely okay with that….or at least I was, before I was made aware of the existence of Boy
The game looks like a lot of fun. I looked at someone playing and something struck me immediately.
This guy takes his 10 year old kid along to fight against hordes of bloodthirsty enemies. Is no one else concerned about that?
Is there some backstory I’m missing?
Oh yes. Lots of backstory lol Honestly if you don’t mind spoilers, I reccomend watching a playthrough or reading the plot
The most unrealistic part of this comic is that Atreus called him “Dad”. I think throughout the whole game I ever only heard him say “Father”, almost weird to see anything else.
Late to the party I know… just picked it up a few days ago, and I’m so relieved to see that others have had the same issue 🙂
Everyone else: talking about tvs or updates that make the text size bigger or some shit im not paying attention to.
Me whos two years late: “ooohhhh I like zoolander” and then proceeding to go on a two-paragraph-long rant about zoolander and the jokes in it and how good it is and other movies that i think are funny
Meta god of war… *Mind blown*
