Like many of you, I have one of those fancy, futuristic, new-wave televisionary receptor devices in my “home of tomorrow”. Mine is even in color. Also past frequenters of this news space may recall that my preferred method of watching these “broadcast moving picture shows” is via DVD releases. Because, admittedly, I am not a patient man. And I prefer gorge myself on shows that I enjoy.

Heroes is one of my two favorite shows on TV right now, you’ve heard me mention it. Battlestar Galactica is the other favorite. Lost I stick with, but lately it’s more out of obligation to the time I’ve invested in the show already, rather than any real expectation that they’ll ever tell us what the fuck is going on.

Anyway, I wanted to mention another couple of television “events” that I’ve been enjoying lately.

The first is Grey’s Anatomy. Yeah, I know. I’ll give you a minute to let that sink in.

My first… exposure, I’d guess you’d say, to Grey’s Anatomy must have been earlier this year, around the time of the Emmys. I had heard the show mentioned previously, but hadn’t seen scene one of the thing, or heard any details about it. However around award show time, I recall flipping channels and I guess the second season had just ended, and on the red carpet people were jabbering about which guy the main character would choose; McDreamy or some other guy.

McDreamy? What the fuck. So my first and solid impression was that Grey’s Anatomy was some weak, gossipish, everybody is screwing everybody, nothing but scandalous sex that happens to take place in a hospital, soap opera.

Anyway, cut to a few weeks ago, my girlfriend and I are in Best Buy. She mentions that some of her friends have been talking about Grey’s Anatomy, and she was interested in checking it out. She’s in her last year at college as a nursing student, and so medical stuff is naturally interesting to her. And we love Scrubs, and she also watches a lot of movies and series with me that I choose, so I figured what the hell. We picked up the first season (it’s short… like 9 episodes I think).

Aside from the fact that I spent nearly the entire first couple of episodes commenting on how much Meredith Grey’s (Ellen Pompeo) mouth annoyed the hell out of me (it moves funny), I actually started to get interested in the show. It was, pretty much, all of the things I mentioned earlier that I thought it was, but it was done pretty well. And there was more to it. There was actually medicine in the show. Dramatized, for sure, but it didn’t seem at all like the hospital thing was just tacked on.

We just finished the second season last night, and I can firmly say I have enjoyed it. There was a good mix of humor, relationships and drama. So I guess what I’m saying is, if you’ve had a similar idea of what the show is, as I did, without having seen it… I don’t know… maybe give it a chance. You might enjoy it. I mean, it didn’t become so popular for no reason, right?

The other show I’m loving right now is the Sci-Fi miniseries The Lost Room. Aside from being a cool concept (don’t watch too many of the videos, aside from the one I linked to they do contain spoilers), it stars Peter Krause, who played Nate in one of my favorite series of all time, Six Feet Under.

I’m worried about saying too much, because while the concept is really fun and interesting, a lot of the show is mysterious, and I’d hate to spoil something. The miniseries started on Monday, and concludes tonight, but they’ve been advertising this for months. You know they don’t invest all that into a show and then only air it once. I’m sure it will be on quite a bit in the coming weeks, so if you get the Sci-Fi channel, I highly suggest keeping an eye out for it. It’s three parts, two hours each, so it’s not a huge commitment.

I’m curious to see how it ends tonight, and whether or not it’s left open to make an ongoing show about it. Battlestar Galactica got its fresh start because of a Sci-Fi channel miniseries, afterall.
